meanwhile: this week has been a doozy.
saturday’s windstorm downed our land protector, our tree elder, a very important guardian spirit for this place that i call home. it was so bizarre, too, how it happened, the way she went down in the exact perfect configuration to nary break a bulb on our outdoor lights. landing perfectly between our canoe and the wood shed, her big branches perching her up so that she did not crash into the neighbor’s roof. the disruption of the roots pulling from the ground toppled our little grill, but that’s about it. of course i attribute this grace to her undying attention to the safety and care of this home of hers. i hesitate to say we “lost” her even though that’s one way that i feel about it. she still feels (and i believe is, though i’m absolutely no tree expert) that she’s very much alive there. if she was left to her own devices i think her roots would grow more and you’d probably see some baby trees coming out of her someway somehow at some point. i’ve seen this in the woods before. i just think she really would have a future life, if the inevitable chainsaw never got a chance to touch her. hopefully we can keep her honored by retaining all the wood for fire, though, and remember the aliveness in her through the years of warmth she’ll provide.
her falling was (and still is) a major disruption to my nervous system. we are so lucky our home is ok - so many people’s aren’t. and if ours wasn’t i sure as hell wouldn’t bother writing this to you today. honestly i had set aside the day to write but almost thought i wasn’t going to. every time this ENE wind howls above 20 or 30 miles an hour, my eyes are glued to the tall doug fir across the street snugged right up against a power pole. it’s right across from our driveway. if that baby goes down, kaputsky. i can see her from my office window. i can see her from the living room. when the wind howls, i try to steel myself. send protective light bubbles up to surround our home. our block. our neighborhood. our city. gaza. all of the world. protection, protection, protection…
a spell for protection
in the minds eye imagine where you are and imagine a bubble of white light expanding around you with each breath you take. continue breathing deeply as you imagine this bubble growing wider and wider to envelope whatever you like. you may do this with your person, your house, your car, your family… an area of the world. simple call in this bubble and visualize it growing and growing to envelope and encase whatever you are wishing to protect.
